So, you’re thinking ~ When is anyone ever going to attack me, while I’m walking around with a wooden sword or a 5.5 foot staff in my hands?

Well, here’s the deal.  Weapons training helps you see the original intent of technique, and this understanding makes you a much better aikidoka in the process.

In my albeit limited experience, training with weapons, helps you think of your hands as swords, and has a way of helping generate ki, and proper orientation toward uke.
